Demo
Figure Painting by Mike Coggins
Mike
brought in several 54mm horse figures
to demonstrate how to paint animals.
Useful Tips and Ideas
- Research specific army, troop and
unit colors - many have specific
types and colors of horses.
- Check on historical and period
differences, such as horse size and
type.
- Use
a black primer coat except for
white horses which get a grey
primer coat.
- Paint 'up' from the darkest color
using very small amount of paint.
Dry brush...
- Start
at top of horse and work down.
On larger horses, follow hair direction.
- Vary colors between horses slightly
by mixing or using different paint
types.
- Paint 'assembly line' fashion to
allow paint to dry.
- 'Dusty'
horses tend to have brownish shadows.
- Highlight using yellow for smaller
scale, but be careful of not going
too far.
- Remember white horses were not
that common in many battles. Musicians
used white horses as non-combatants.
