Demo

Naval Wargaming miniatures with Mike Coggins.

Mike showed us his techniques to detail naval wargaming miniatures. He does Napoleonic era ships as well as others.

Notes

  • Kits are mostly white metal or resin.
  • A pinvise drill is essential for pre-drilling the holes for the ship rigging.
  • Two type of rigging - tarred, black standing rigging and untarred, white running rigging.
  • Using beeswax over kit rigging prevents it from getting fuzzy after painting over time.
  • Fancy metal Christmas ribbons can be cut and painted black to create the rope ladders going from the sides of the ship to the masts.
  • Attaching the ship to a small base aids in holding and building the kit. Painting it blue before waves and the final color are added helps hide chips which occur during gaming.
  • While accurate, green water is not the norm in gaming.
